My fight against Leukemia / Mijn gevecht tegen Leukemie     - by Rick Haan
Be yourself, life is too short to be someone else

And again it went wrong...

After being home for 2 days, I experienced so much pain in my knees on Sunday night that I screamed in agony. We tried everything in terms of pain relief, but it wasn't enough, so I had to be readmitted to the Princess Máxima Center in Utrecht urgently.

Once again, I received esketamine, morphine, and clonidine to manage the pain, and they will investigate the cause of the pain again. Mom and Marlon brought me, and Mom went back home the next day while my brother Marlon will take care of me this week.

I felt miserable for 2 days, and then the pain started to subside a bit. However, I had some difficulty with urination, and after some tests, it turned out that I had the BK virus. This virus is present in everyone's body, and usually, it doesn't make you sick. But because my immune system is weak, I experienced some unpleasant symptoms and had pain while urinating due to the blood clots that I had to pass. There isn't much they can do about it except providing fluid through the IV and prescribing some bladder relaxant medication. It's a matter of passing it out and hoping it goes away quickly.

Despite that, I was able to enjoy gaming with my brother for 2 days, which was a good distraction and really nice to have some quality time together. It seemed like I would be able to go home on Sunday or Monday.

Unfortunately, on Friday, things started to worsen again. I became very short of breath and needed oxygen. The next day, I had a high fever, inflamed eyes, and the oxygen level was set to the maximum. Unfortunately, I experienced another sort of pain, this time in my left arm. After one and a half hours of excruciating pain, it was somewhat under control. However, my oxygen saturation was very low, and the fever persisted, so as a precautionary measure, I was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit on Sunday from the adjacent UMC Utrecht hospital, in the adult ward.
