My fight against Leukemia / Mijn gevecht tegen Leukemie     - by Rick Haan
Be yourself, life is too short to be someone else

Hi Everyone!

This website has been created by me, Rick Haan.
I am 19 years old and have recurrent Leukemia AML (Acute Myeloïde Leukemia).

This means that the leukemia has returned for the second time.

About me.

I have launched this website because my life has been turned upside down for the second time.

On 12-01-2023, during a routine check-up, I was informed that my Leukemia AML had returned after 1 year and 9 months. Once again my world came to a complete standstill...

As many people ask me how I'm doing, I thought it would be nice to create a website in two languages so that my English-speaking friends can also follow along.

So here we are!

Together with my mother, I'm trying to update the site as much as possible, so that everyone can keep track of where I stand in my battle against Leukemia.

I have also created a crowdfunding campaign, the reason for this campaign is that I would like to have some budget because I am only 19 and therefore ineligible for benefits. Another downside is that I'm not yet 21 years old, so I don't qualify for anything and only receive a small allowance from the municipality. After paying my bills, there is very little left.

After the approximately 8-week-long treatment at the Prinses Maxima Centrum for my stem cell transplant, I'm still not completely out of isolation.

I am allowed to go home, but for about half a year, I can't go to school, work, a pub or theater, a crowded store, and I can't even hug or see my family because it can be dangerous for me. Recovery is definitely not in sight after half a year, it will take about 2 years, maybe even 3, for me to start feeling somewhat like my old self again.

I cannot immediately return to work either, so I have no income and have to rely on my parents for support. This is far from ideal, and having some money to do enjoyable things would give me a huge boost and help me slowly reclaim my life.

How amazing would it be if, despite everything, I could travel like my peers, get my driver's license, buy my first car, and do fun things like going on day trips or shopping online?

This way, I can experience some of the things a 19-year-old should do... and of course, I will share stories, photos, and videos of all the fun things I'll do with your help.
